Sts. Cosmas and Damian

The martyrs Cosmas and Damian have been executed within the metropolis of Cyrrhus in Syria about 303, through the persecution decreed by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Other information about their lives are unsure. An early legend means that they have been twin brothers born in Arabia who turned expert physicians.

As Christian medical doctors, in response to the legend, they charged no charges of these they healed or cared for; they have been thus referred to as “the holy moneyless ones,” and together with St. Luke (the “beloved doctor” talked about by St. Paul in Col 4:14), Cosmas and Damian are thought-about the patron saints of physicians.

Within a century of the deaths of Cosmas and Damian, their fame had unfold extra extensively than that of most martyrs, and maybe as early because the sixth century their names have been added to the Roman Canon (the supply of our present Eucharistic Prayer [no. 1] used at Mass).
