Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is stepping down as president of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), the right-wing group within the European Parliament that’s more and more calling the pictures in Brussels.
“When I used to be requested to increase my time period till the [EU] elections, I agreed,” Meloni on Sunday instructed an annual competition organized by her party, Brothers of Italy, which accounts for the most important delegation within the ECR with 24 lawmakers, as reported by information company ANSA.
“Now that the elections have taken place, I feel I’ve fulfilled my responsibility and I wish to announce that I’m going to resign as president of the European Conservatives,” Meloni stated, stressing that the group now “deserves to have a president who can take care of it full time.”
Poland’s former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has been vying for the management of the ECR, together with his Law and Justice (PiS) party holding 20 MEPs.
Meloni, who has held the place since 2020, stated she anticipated Morawiecki to run and would again him.
