EU candidate standing: lead MEP welcomes Council resolution | News | European Parliament

David McAllister (EPP, DE) made the next assertion on Thursday, after the announcement of the choice of the European Council:

“By granting EU candidate standing to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, the European Union demonstrates its unwavering dedication in direction of these nations and their freely chosen European path. Today’s resolution marks a historic second for our European Union. It is an indication of management, accountability, resolve and principled political imaginative and prescient in addition to an indication of hope for the residents in Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. I welcome at this time’s resolution of the European Council at a time of unprecedented geopolitical challenges. Granting the identical standing to Georgia is in sight, as soon as its authorities can have delivered on the indicated priorities.

As the accession of these nations to the EU will probably be merit-based, anchored on the respect for the related procedures and conditional upon the fulfilment of the established standards, I name on the authorities of Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia to proceed finishing up the related reforms, notably within the areas of democracy, the rule of legislation, human rights, a market economic system and implementation of the EU acquis.

The European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs will carefully monitor the enlargement negotiations and can help all three nations on their path in direction of additional integration into the European Union.”
