‘8 Simple Rules’ 20 Years Later: 10 Big-Name Guest Stars


After John Ritter left Three’s Company behind and Katey Sagal was now not Married… With Children, however earlier than Kaley Cuoco found The Big Bang Theory and David Spade realized the Rules of Engagement, these comedy TV stars aligned for ABC’s 8 Simple Rules.

The sitcom, initially titled 8 Simple Rules… For Dating My Teenage Daughter, premiered on September 17, 2002, starring Ritter as overprotective dad Paul Hennessy, Sagal taking part in even-tempered mother Cate Hennessy, and Cuoco as Bridget, one in all three Hennessy youngsters.

After Ritter died unexpectedly in 2003, Spade joined the principle forged taking part in Cate’s nephew C.J., as did The Rockford FilesJames Garner, who performed Cate’s father, Jim.

8 Simple Rules got a tepid reception from TV critics, who known as it “pretty likable in a bland form of approach” and “on the verge of humorous from time to time.” (“On tv as in life, dads can be extra profitable if that they had higher writers,” quipped The New York Times’ Ron Wertheimer in a single overview.) But viewers took a liking to it, even awarding 8 Simple Rules’ first season a People’s Choice Award for Favorite New TV Comedy and a Teen Choice Award for Choice Breakout TV Show.
